  2. About the club

”Fencing is incredibly physical, you have to be agile, and it’s highly dependent on intelligence and outwitting your opponent.”

With a history that goes back to the 12th century, it’s no surprise that fencing has featured in every modern Olympics. Three distinctly shaped weapons are used: the foil, the épée and the sabre. Rather than swinging from chandeliers or jumping off balconies, you spar on a 14m x 2m strip (or “piste”), and the action is so frantic that it is judged electronically rather than by the eye. A bullet is the only thing faster than the moving tip of a sword (including archery!) in the Olympic games. As a result, fencers display high reaction time in judging and reacting to and with complex movements.

More information on fencing in general can be found on the links to the right of your page.

The University of Limerick Fencing Club began when Miriam Cashman, a penthatlete, set up the club in 2008. The club initially began as an épée only club, but however we do hope to branch into foil during the 2011/2012 year. Due to the pentathalon connections, the club often invited penthatles to train with the.
