  2. About the club

”Fencing is incredibly physical, you have to be agile, and it’s highly dependent on intelligence and outwitting your opponent.”

With a history that goes back to the 12th century, it’s no surprise that fencing has featured in every modern Olympics. Three distinctly shaped weapons are used: the foil, the épée and the sabre. Rather than swinging from chandeliers or jumping off balconies, you spar on a 14m x 2m strip (or “piste”), and the action is so frantic that it is judged electronically rather than by the eye. The moving tip of the sword is slower only than a bullet in the Olympic games. Ireland’s only fencing competitor in the Olympic games in Beijing is a female sabreur.

At the moment we are primarily an épée club, however we will soon be branching into foil.

    What is fencing good for?

Balance, co-ordination and lightning-fast reactions. It’s an enjoyable way to improve your physical and mental agility.

    Why should I try fencing?

It’s a fun way to meet new people and keep fit! You will have the opportunity to be coached by Tristan Parris, a former British champion with an intriguing sense of humour.

    How much does it cost?

Membership is only €5 for students, €10 for alumni/staff and €20 for external members (non-UL). Training is FREE and equipment is provided.

    When is Training?

All training takes place on the indoor sports hall of the PESS building (the building directly behind and to the left of the sports arena)
Training on Thursday (6-8) is with coach Tristan Parris. He is widely renowned for his brilliant coaching techniques and UL Fencing are proud to offer his coaching to beginners as well as more advanced fencers.
